Medical researchers from Japan, China, and the United States have collaborated to analyze the behavior and genetic code of mice with mutations in the SETD1A gene. This mutation turned off the gene, thereby affecting brain development. But wait. What does this have to do with psychology? Previous studies have shown that this special gene in humans influences the development of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that is usually accompanied by delusions and hallucinations. People with this disability may have some thinking difficulties. Researchers sought to turn this gene “on” in mice to see if it could improve some of these psychological symptoms. They succeeded! They used drugs that targeted this gene to reverse the effect.
This study shows that our thoughts, behaviors, and even genetics can change. This can lead to changes in our brain and, more importantly, changes in our cognitive function and life satisfaction.Cooperation and understanding between different sciences may advance the creation of life-changing therapies
