Do Avid Technology’s (NASDAQ:AVID) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

May 16, 2021 by Staff Reporter

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, ‘If you’ve been playing poker for half an hour and you still don’t know who the patsy is, you’re the patsy.’ When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Avid Technology (NASDAQ:AVID), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Avid Technology Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In a capitalist society capital chases profits, and that means share prices tend rise with earnings per share (EPS). So like a ray of sunshine through a gap in the clouds, improving EPS is considered a good sign. You can imagine, then, that it almost knocked my socks off when I realized that Avid Technology grew its EPS from US$0.046 to US$0.48, in one short year. Even though that growth rate is unlikely to be repeated, that looks like a breakout improvement.

One way to double-check a company’s growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Avid Technology’s EBIT margins have actually improved by 6.5 percentage points in the last year, to reach 13%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 6.7%. That falls short of ideal.

Are Avid Technology Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Avid Technology insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. With a whopping US$83m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company’s success. That’s certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.

It’s good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Avid Technology with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b is about US$3.8m.

The Avid Technology CEO received US$3.1m in compensation for the year ending . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Should You Add Avid Technology To Your Watchlist?

Avid Technology’s earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. Avid Technology certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it’s probably well worth further consideration. It is worth noting though that we have found 6 warning signs for Avid Technology (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to take into consideration.

Although Avid Technology certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you’re looking for.
