Today’s Google Doodle is dedicated to launching the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament, appealing to football fans. The graffiti depicts an illustration of a soccer field with football and referee whistles, surrounded by various structures that show the diversity of Europe. If confused by the name of the tournament, the championship to compete with each other for Europe’s best football nations was originally scheduled for 2020, but was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The championship will start today and Italy will face Turkey in Rome, but the timing of the match (00:30 IST) means that the tournament will start in India tomorrow (Saturday, June 12).
The one-year delay is the first time the Euro Championship has had to be rescheduled. Founded in 1958, the tournament is held every even year, and this year’s championship will feature a total of 24 teams from six groups in 11 European cities.
Germany and Spain have won three times each, but defeated France in the 2016 Euro final, and this time the defending champion is Portugal.
But this time around, France, who won the 2018 World Cup, will start as a favorite with Henri Delaunay’s trophy and will face Germany in the first match.
