SUNNYVALE — LinkedIn has solidified its long-term South Bay presence with a big property purchase, a building upgrade, and the ongoing construction of its future head offices.
The tech firm has bought a large office complex in Sunnyvale where its headquarters are now located, has launched an upgrade of a Sunnyvale office building, and is building out a modern campus for its headquarters.
LinkedIn has paid $323 million in an all-cash deal for its current headquarters in Sunnyvale, according to documents filed with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office on July 1.
The employment- and career-oriented social media company bought the headquarters complex that it was renting at 950 and 1000 W. Maude Ave. in Sunnyvale, the county property records show.
The West Maude headquarters campus totals 287,600 square feet, according to property database service CommercialCafe.
DB Real Estate Crossroads, a realty unit of Germany-based Deutsche Bank, a financial services behemoth, sold the property to LinkedIn, the county documents show.
The building purchase is of interest in light of the conventional wisdom during much of 2020 regarding the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on tech company attitudes.
More than a few experts opined that the deadly bug and the shift to remote workplaces would permanently chase away tech companies from their physical innovation hubs that dot Silicon Valley and digital outposts such as San Francisco.
In this instance, LinkedIn has purchased a campus that at present serves as the company’s principal — but temporary — corporate head offices. The tech titan is building a brand-new campus in Mountain View that is slated to become its future primary headquarters at some point.

Separately, the tech company has launched improvements to a building where it’s a tenant at 580 N. Pastoria Way in Sunnyvale, county records filed on July 1 show.
This older building totals 10,900 square feet, according to the LoopNet commercial property listing service. The nature of the improvements wasn’t specified. Frequently, when an office or retail tenant undertakes improvements at a site, that suggests the renter intends to continue leasing the property.
LinkedIn owns or rents numerous office buildings in this area of Sunnyvale, which is also near the future Mountain View headquarters and the current head offices.
As an example, the rented building on Pastoria is a four-minute drive or a 25-minute walk from the future LinkedIn headquarters on East Middlefield Road near Central Expressway. The Pastoria Way office building is even closer to the existing headquarters.
The future LinkedIn headquarters remain under construction. The tech company aims to construct three new office buildings and retain three existing office buildings at 800 E. Middlefield, according to a post on the website of project architect Studios.

The goal of this complex development is a “dynamic” “hybrid campus” that will total 1.1 million square feet, the Studios post states.
The new LinkedIn headquarters hub will have the kinds of bells and whistles that can appeal to tech workers who are seeking safe and healthy workspaces in the COVID era.
“We prioritized access to natural light, views, and direct connections to the outdoors,” Studios posted on its website.
The future LinkedIn headquarters complex will contain elements that will permit an array of ways for workers to gather with each other or keep a measure of social distancing.
“The buildings feature a number of terraces, roof decks, and courtyards, as well as two major open spaces for gatherings, recreation, and relaxation,” Studios posted on its website. “Pedestrian walking loops and bicycle paths engage all corners of the campus.”
